Colo River: Sydney’s wilderness paddle
The Colo River suits fit parties comfortable with multi-day wilderness travel who want a deep sandstone gorge in Wollemi National Park, a short drive north-west of Sydney. At normal levels it is pool-and-run water, long flat pools broken by sandy runs where you drag the packraft; summer in the gorge is hot, and high water is a reason to stay home. You walk in on steep ridge tracks off the plateau on the Putty Road side, or start more gently on the lower river near Colo village, and NPWS has the current word on track access, closures and permits.
