Field Note
Whitewater packrafting, explained
Whitewater packrafting is running rapids in a purpose-built packraft: a decked hull with a spray deck, thigh straps and extra rocker, paddled by someone trained in bracing, ferry-gliding and swiftwater rescue. Rivers are graded from Grade I to Grade VI, and Grade II is already consequential in a small hull. Seeka builds self-bailing touring packrafts for lakes, estuaries and gentle rivers (Grade I), so for whitewater, look to the specialist hulls from Alpacka Raft, MRS or Kokopelli.
