Bikerafting: getting started in Australia

Ride to the water. Strap the bike to the packraft. Paddle the section you could not ride, then ride on. That is bikerafting, and it turns a dead-end trail into a circuit. The bike and the packraft are both in play, each used where it belongs, and the day covers more ground for it.

What bikerafting is

You ride to a put-in. At the bank, you pull the packraft from the pack, inflate it, strap the bike to the bow and paddle the water section. On the far bank you deflate, repack and ride out.

The bike rides on the bow, not inside the hull. Weight sits outside and forward, and that changes how the hull handles. On flat water, with practice, it is manageable.

Why the loop beats the out-and-back

Most bikepacking trails that reach water dead-end at the bank. You ride in, turn around, and ride the same ground twice. Add a packraft and the water becomes the connector.

A reservoir you cannot ride around becomes a crossing. A river that blocks a through-route becomes a paddle leg. A coastal inlet that dead-ends a road becomes a ferry. The same trail network opens up differently.

Loops are easier to plan and better to finish. The water leg is rarely the longest section. It is the section that makes the rest possible.

Strapping a bike to a packraft

Wheels off or bars turned. Weight low and centred. Two rules, and everything else follows from them.

Wheels off, the frame sits lower and closer to the hull centreline. Strap the wheels flat on top or tuck them alongside the frame. The stack stays manageable and the wind has less to grab.

Wheels on and bars turned, the bike is bulkier but quicker to rig. The bars and saddle become the high points. Keep them as low as you can without letting anything hang into the water.

Nothing drags. A loose strap, a pedal arm or a derailleur trailing in the water adds drag and pulls your steering. Check every attachment before you launch. Rig it on dry land, give it a push, watch for swing.

Practise the full rig on grass first. Inflate, position, strap, and carry it a short way to the bank. Do it at home before you do it at a remote lake with an hour of daylight left.

The extra kit

Straps are the main addition. Heavy-duty buckle straps with no loose tail beat ratchet straps for this. Bring more than you think you need. One per wheel, one across the frame, one spare.

The drivetrain side of a bike carries grit, oil and chain grease. A dry bag over the chainring and derailleur keeps it off the hull and makes cleanup easier. A small zip-lock for pedals you remove does the same job.

Patience is the last item. Rigging a bike to a packraft takes two or three times longer than you expect the first time. The second time is faster. Build the transition into your day plan so it does not eat your daylight margin.

Skills before you combine

Be settled in the hull on your own before you add a bike. Flat-water launching, wet re-entry and reading wind should all be methodical. Not perfect. Methodical.

A strapped bike changes two things straight away: trim and wind profile. The bow sits heavier and lower. The bike catches wind from the side and pulls the hull around. Both are predictable once you feel them. Neither is manageable while you are still working out basic hull control.

Do your first bikeraft session on a small, sheltered lake with easy bank access on both sides. Keep the crossing short. Rig, paddle across, unrig, and do it again. Two crossings in a controlled setting teach you more than one long crossing on a trip.

Flat water first

Lakes and slow rivers are the right starting conditions. A packraft with a bike on the bow sits lower in the water and responds more slowly. Moving current adds variables that flat water does not.

A bike-loaded bow on a moving river is an advanced combination. Current pushes the loaded bow differently. Eddies and ferry angles change. Save rivers for after the rig is dialled on still water.

Skip long open-water crossings in your first bikeraft season. Wind builds quickly on large lakes and bays, and a loaded bow catches more of it. Keep crossings short and the shore close until you know how the rigged hull answers wind.

Three route shapes in Australia

A reservoir circuit works where a dam creates a big body of water that riders would otherwise ride around or turn back from. Ride the access trail to one bank, paddle across, ride the far-side trail out. The paddle leg is often under two kilometres. The riding it opens up can be much longer.

A coastal inlet link-up suits places where estuaries and tidal inlets cut across coastal trail networks. The ride follows the coast to where a creek or inlet blocks the through-route. A short paddle crosses it. The ride continues on the far bank. These crossings work best at low tide and in calm conditions.

A river-valley rail trail with a paddle leg appears where old rail corridors follow river valleys and the river loops away from the trail. Ride the rail trail, drop to the river, paddle a flat stretch downstream, and rejoin the trail further along. The river does the scenic work. The rail trail does the distance.
