How to choose a packraft

The packraft you need is the one that fits your day as it is, not the most ambitious version of it. Start from the water you paddle most. Then the walk between put-ins. Then who comes along. Get those three right and the rest of the spec falls into place.

Start from your days, not the spec sheet

Write down the last three trips you did, or the three you are planning. Note the water: a lake, a river, coastal inlets. Note the carry between the car and the put-in. Note who else is coming.

A packraft rewards the walker. If you drive to the water and never carry the hull, a rigid kayak or a sit-on-top may suit you better. They paddle well and cost you nothing in carry weight because you never carry them. Packrafts trade some on-water performance for the ability to go in a pack.

Once you know the trip shape, you can match a packraft to it. The sections below take each decision in turn.

Solo or tandem

Settle this one early. A solo packraft and a tandem are not interchangeable.

A solo hull carries one person. You can put kit on the bow tube, but the cockpit is sized for one paddler. A tandem hull carries two and is wider and longer to match. That width and length cost you on the carry.

If you paddle with a partner regularly, a tandem is the right call. If you paddle alone ninety percent of the time, a solo hull is the one you will use. Buy a tandem for the occasional two-up trip and you carry the difference on every solo day. Count the ratio before you choose.

Some paddlers who go solo with heavy hunt or fish loads use a tandem hull for the extra floor space. That works, and the carry cost is real. Ask whether a larger solo hull solves the same problem with less weight.

Open self-bail or decked cockpit

Self-bail hulls have perforations in the floor that let water drain out as fast as it comes in. Decked cockpits seal around you with a spray skirt. Each suits different water and a different climate.

Self-bail is simpler to paddle and easier to re-enter after a swim. Water drains without pumping. For flat water, slow rivers, lakes and warm-climate coastal work, a self-bail hull is the practical choice. All three Seeka packrafts are self-bail.

A decked cockpit keeps you drier on fast whitewater and cold water. It traps warmth. It also means a wet exit if you capsize, and the skill to roll or wet-exit safely. Brands such as Alpacka and Kokopelli make decked options. If your water is fast and your climate is cold, that is where their advantage is real.

Seeka builds self-bailing hulls for lakes, inlets, estuaries and easy rivers. Serious whitewater and open cold-water crossings call for a decked hull. Match the hull type to the water you paddle.

Fabric and floor durability

Packraft fabric is measured in denier, a count of fibre weight per thread. Higher denier means thicker, heavier, more abrasion-resistant cloth. Lower denier means lighter cloth that is more vulnerable to sharp rock.

The tubes and the floor do different work. Tubes hold air and flex through current. The floor takes the abrasion from gravel bars, rocky launches and dragging the hull over shallows. Most makers use heavier fabric on the floor than on the tubes for that reason. Seeka runs heavy duty, ultra lite weight tubes over an 840D floor.

For walk-in flat water and gentle rivers, a standard fabric weight is fine. For rocky, technical rivers where the hull scrapes often, heavier floor fabric adds life. The trade is carry weight. Ask any brand what denier they use on the tubes and the floor separately, and what that means for carry weight and expected life in your conditions.

Do not let a brand compare their fabric to a competitor without a source. Denier numbers are easy to cite and easy to inflate. Ask for the spec sheet.

Fit and load

Torso length matters more than height. A paddler with a long torso needs a cockpit set further back in the hull so the paddle clears the bow without a shortened stroke. Sit in the packraft, or check the maker's fit guide, before committing.

Kit goes on the bow. Most packrafts have lash points or a bow line for strapping a pack to the front tube. The bow lifts a little when loaded, which changes the trim. Too much weight forward and the hull is slow and hard to steer. Practise loading your real pack before the trip.

A published weight capacity is a guide, not a performance target. A hull at its listed maximum is sluggish. Leave room. If you are regularly near the stated limit, look at the next size up.

Warranty and support questions to ask before paying

A packraft takes real punishment. The warranty and the support behind it matter.

Ask what the warranty covers and for how long. Materials and welding should be covered separately from general wear. Ask whether UV degradation is included. Ask what the process is: do you post the packraft back, or can a local repairer assess it?

Ask where the company is based and where the packraft ships from. An Australian buyer waiting on warranty work for a hull shipped from overseas can wait a long time. Find out before you pay. Seeka is designed and tested in Australia, and the warranty is held here.

Ask who does repairs outside the warranty period. Packraft fabric can be patched. Seams can be re-welded. A known repair path extends the life of the hull a long way. Some brands sell repair kits and publish repair guides. Others do not. Every Seeka ships with a repair kit, and a spare is $29.

Ask the company a specific question about your planned use before you buy. The quality of the answer tells you a lot about the support you will get if something goes wrong.
