Look after a packraft and it lasts a long time. The materials are tough, the welding is solid, and the two-year Seeka warranty covers both. What the warranty does not cover is how you treat the hull between trips: stored wet, cooked in a hot car, dragged across sharp rock, left inflated in full sun. Those are the things that shorten a life. None of them is hard to avoid.
Rinse and dry, every time
After every paddle, rinse the packraft in fresh water. Run water through the self-bailing floor as well as over the hull. The drain holes pull a lot through them on the water, and they hold grit and debris if you skip this.
Open the valves before you hang the hull to dry. Moisture trapped inside an air chamber is a slow problem. It does not fail anything today. It sets up conditions that break down coatings from the inside over time.
Hang the packraft, or drape it over a rail, in the shade. Let it dry completely before you pack it away. A hull that goes into storage slightly damp comes out worse than it went in.
Salt water care
Salt water asks for faster action than fresh. Rinse the same day you paddle. Salt crystals form as the water evaporates, and those crystals are abrasive. Left against coated fabric or around a valve seat, they work into the material and the wear compounds trip after trip.
The valves are the most vulnerable part in salt. Rinse them with fresh water, open and close them a few times to flush the mechanism, then leave them open to dry. A valve that stiffens or seizes is almost always a salt problem caught late.
Inlets and estuaries are well within what a Seeka is built for. The salt care is simple. The trick is doing it every time.
Rolled or loose
Loose and fully dry beats tightly rolled and slightly damp. If you have the space to store the packraft flat or draped, take it. Hard permanent creases form when a rolled hull sits compressed in the same position for months, and those creases fatigue the coating along the fold line over years.
If it has to be rolled, roll it loosely and change the fold orientation between trips. Store it in a bag that breathes rather than a sealed dry bag. Sealed storage traps residual moisture against the fabric.
A stuff sack or a cotton pillowcase works well at home. Compression is for the pack on a walk-in, not for the shelf.
UV and heat
The Australian sun degrades coated fabrics. UV breaks down the polymer coating that makes a packraft airtight and water-resistant. A hull left outside for weeks ages faster than one stored in shade. That is no reason to stay out of the sun. It is a reason not to leave the packraft spread out when you are not using it.
Heat is a separate problem. Hot cars and tin sheds reach temperatures that soften adhesives. Valve bonds and fittings are designed to hold under paddling loads and reasonable temperatures. Sustained heat beyond what you would comfortably sit in is outside that range. A packraft left in a dark car on a 40 °C day is being cooked.
Shade and cool are the rule. A garage corner, a cupboard, a dry laundry shelf. Any of those is fine. Direct sun and enclosed heat are not.
The pre-trip inspection habit
Check the packraft the night before a big walk-in. Not at the put-in after a three-hour carry.
Inflate the hull fully and let it sit for fifteen minutes. Run your hands along the seams. Press on the floor. Listen for a slow hiss. A slow leak you can live with on a short day trip becomes a serious problem after a long carry-in.
Check each valve. The cap should seat cleanly and the valve body should not wobble. Run a finger around the base where it bonds to the hull. Any softness or separation gets sorted before you leave.
Look at the self-bailing floor. Dragging on river gravel is the most common cause of wear on a packraft floor. Small abrasions are normal. A thinning patch or a cut that has opened gets patched from the repair kit before the next trip, not after.
What shortens a packraft's life
Stored wet is the most common. The damage is slow and invisible until it is not. A hull that smells off when you unpack it has been growing mould in the folds. That is a coating problem, not just a smell.
Stored hot is the second. The adhesive bonds around the valves are the weakest point in a packraft under heat. One long summer in a car boot can undo work that is otherwise sound.
Dragged over rock is the third. A packraft is not a sled. Launching and landing over sharp rock grinds the floor fabric. Carry it to the water and carry it out. Two minutes of effort each way buys years of floor life.
Left inflated in the sun is the fourth. A fully inflated packraft expands as it heats. The pressure inside a hull sitting on a hot beach can exceed what the seams and valves are designed for. Deflate it or move it into the shade.
None of this needs special gear. It needs consistency.
