Packraft paddles: what matters

A packraft paddle lives in the same pack as the packraft. It breaks down into four pieces, folds alongside a deflated hull, and rides out on your back. That one requirement shapes how a good packraft paddle is built and what to look for when you choose one.

Why four pieces

Most kayak paddles come apart in two. A packraft paddle breaks into four. The shorter sections fit inside or alongside a rolled hull without adding a separate carry. You are already carrying the hull, the air bag and your camping kit. The paddle cannot demand its own tube or bag. Four-piece construction keeps the total pack small enough to move through scrub, over a saddle, or onto a commercial flight without checking a bag.

The joints on a quality four-piece paddle lock securely and hold their feather angle under load. That is the part to pay attention to. Sloppy ferrules twist under a hard stroke and wear your wrists out over a long day on the water.

Length for a wide hull

Packrafts sit wider than sea kayaks and most river kayaks. You are perched higher on the water and your stroke angle is shallower. A paddle that suits a narrow touring kayak leaves you catching air on the recovery stroke. As a general guide, packraft paddles run longer than their kayak equivalents for the same paddler. If you are buying a paddle before you have paddled a packraft, err longer rather than shorter. Seeka paddles run 220 to 230 cm.

Blade shape for the job

Whitewater paddles use short, wide blades with a strong dihedral, built for quick, high-angle strokes in moving water. That shape works when you need to brace hard or punch through a wave. For most packraft touring, a longer and narrower blade is more comfortable. The catch is softer, the pull is steadier, and your shoulders hold up across a full day of flat water or moderate current.

Seeka paddles are made for the touring end of the spectrum. They suit the paddling that goes with multi-day trips: covering distance, crossing lakes, moving down river valleys at a steady pace. If your packrafting is mostly technical whitewater, a dedicated whitewater blade may suit you better. Most people who come to Seeka are not doing that.

Fibreglass versus carbon

Seeka sells both: a four-piece fibreglass paddle at $119 and 950 g, and a four-piece carbon paddle at $249 and 800 g. The practical difference comes down to weight, swing feel and cost. Carbon is lighter, and you notice it across a long day in the swing weight: each stroke takes a little less effort, and that adds up over several hours. Fibreglass is heavier, still performs well, and costs less. It is also a little more forgiving if a shaft takes a knock on a rocky bank or a shallow crossing.

Neither material is fragile in normal use. Carbon can crack on a sharp point impact where fibreglass might dent or flex. For most multi-day touring on gentle to moderate terrain, fibreglass does the job. For longer trips where every gram of pack weight counts, carbon justifies the cost. The call depends on how far you are walking and how much you want to spend.

Packing and protecting a broken-down paddle

Four-piece paddles pack small, but the blade edges and ferrule sections need some protection. A simple sleeve or paddle bag stops the edges cutting through pack fabric and keeps grit out of the joints. Some people wrap blades in a fleece layer or tuck them inside a sleeping bag compression sack. The method matters less than the habit. Loose blades rattling round a pack will eventually chip an edge or score a ferrule.

When you reassemble at the water, seat each section fully before paddling. A half-locked joint moves under load and can come apart mid-stroke. Take ten seconds at the put-in to check each connection.

Care after use

Salt water and grit are the main enemies of ferrule joints. Rinse each section with fresh water after paddling, paying attention to the male ends where sediment collects. If a joint feels stiff, rinse again before forcing it. Grit inside a ferrule works as an abrasive and damages the locking surfaces over time.

Dry the sections before storing them together. Moisture trapped in assembled joints can corrode the internal hardware and make future disassembly harder. Store the paddle disassembled in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight. UV degrades shaft materials over years of exposure, and Australian sun is strong.
