Packraft fabric is a woven base cloth with an airtight coating bonded to it. The coating holds the air in the tubes. The cloth takes the abrasion, the UV and the flex. Choose a packraft well and you know what the cloth is, where each weight goes, and what the seams do.
What packraft fabric is made from
Most packraft tubes and floors start as woven nylon or polyester. The weave gives the cloth its tensile strength. On its own, woven nylon is not airtight, so a coating is bonded to the inside face to seal it. TPU, thermoplastic polyurethane, is the coating the industry uses for the job. TPU-coated nylon holds air, flexes without cracking, and bonds cleanly to itself under heat.
PVC-coated fabrics exist in the inflatable world too. PVC is heavier for a given denier and harder to repair in the field. TPU-coated nylon has become the standard for packraft tubes and floors. The fabric is half the story. How the panels are joined matters just as much.
Denier numbers explained
Denier measures yarn thickness. Higher denier, heavier yarn. A 420D fabric is woven from thicker, heavier yarn than a 210D fabric. Heavier yarn generally means more abrasion resistance and a stronger weave. It also means more weight.
Tubes and floors are rarely the same denier. Tubes flex constantly as the packraft moves on the water. A lighter cloth flexes freely and stays packable. Floors take the direct contact: rock slides, gravel bars, a drag over a log. So floors run heavier. A 420D tube over an 840D floor is a common pattern across the industry. Lighter where flex matters, heavier where abrasion happens.
A higher number is not automatically a better cloth. A 420D tube on a well-built packraft is not worse than an 840D tube on the same packraft. They do different jobs. What matters is whether the weight suits the panel, and whether the coating and construction behind it are sound.
Tube duty versus floor duty
The tubes inflate to hold their shape and keep you above the waterline. They flex as the packraft bends through current, as you load kit, as you deflate and roll it for the carry. That constant flex is why tube fabric runs lighter. A very heavy cloth in the tubes adds weight without adding durability the tube can use.
The floor sits on the river. Grit, submerged rock, a gravel bar landing, a boot heel dragged across it on entry. All of it lands on the floor. The floor also carries your body weight and any kit packed below the seat. A heavier cloth resists abrasion from below without slowing the flex of the tubes above.
So two denier values on one packraft is not a compromise. It is a hull built to the demands of each panel.
Welded seams versus glued seams
Packraft panels are joined at their edges. Two methods are common across the industry: heat welding and adhesive bonding.
A welded seam uses heat and pressure to fuse the TPU coating of one panel directly to the coating of the next. The coating melts and re-sets as a single layer. No separate adhesive. The join is as strong as the coating itself.
A glued seam uses contact adhesive between panels. Done well, it is strong and airtight. It is still a join between two surfaces rather than a fusion of one. UV, heat and repeated flex degrade adhesive over time, and a poorly executed glued seam is the most common source of a slow leak on an older inflatable.
Welded seams depend far less on adhesive chemistry and cure conditions. For Australian sun and summer heat, welded is the lower-maintenance choice.
UV and heat care in Australia
The sun is the main enemy of packraft fabric in Australia. UV degrades TPU over time. A coating left in direct sun for years goes brittle, loses flex and cracks along fold lines. That is true of TPU-coated nylon from any brand.
A hot car or a tin shed speeds it up. Dry storage, out of direct UV, is the single most effective way to extend fabric life.
Wash off salt, grit and sunscreen after a day on the water. Sunscreen chemicals in particular attack TPU coatings. Rinse the tubes and floor with fresh water and let the packraft dry in shade before it goes away.
UV-protective sprays for inflatable fabrics exist, and they are worth applying before multi-day sun exposure.
